Sheldon Harnick's musical theater career began in the 1950's in New York City with his first song in a Broadway show, "The Boston Beguine," for New Faces of 1952. In 1957 he teamed up with composer Jerry Bock to create the scores for some of the most beloved and memorable musicals on Broadway. His witty and brilliant lyrics caught the attention of many Broadway composers, and he collaborated with Richard Rodgers, Joe Raposo, Michel Legrand, and Cy Coleman. The opera world has heard his librettos for operas by Jack Beeson and Thomas Z Shepard, along with his translation/adaptations of The Merry Widow, Carmen and many other works. |
